Historical Village Days ‘Vow’ to be a great time

HOUGHTON LAKE – The Houghton Lake Historical Village will host ‘Village Days’ for three days of family fun in a historic setting August 5-7 at the Historical Village in Houghton Lake.

Admission is $5 per person for a badge that gains each person entry for all three days. Children under age 12 are admitted for free and all active duty military with their immediate family members are also free.

The event will emphasize life in the 1800s. On site will be three blacksmiths, a doctor, barber, dress maker, print shop worker, a lumbering small gauge train display, and much more.

Children and their families can make candles, dress up in clothes from the old days, participate in games like Sack Races, Scavenger Hunts and skills for little loggers. There will also be contests such as for Pie Eating, or telling the most convincing untrue story, known as a Liar’s Contest.

Village Days all begins on Friday Aug. 5 at Noon with 13 buildings and exhibits open with limited activities. A pig roast is scheduled for 6 p.m. And costs $9 per person. It includes food, non-alcoholic beverage and dessert. There will be a cash bar open during the roast, as well as entertainment by Genot Picor.

On Saturday the festivities begin at 10 a.m. with the raising of the Flag by Veteran Major Joe Giralamo. There will also be semi-professional Historic style Wrestling and entertainment by Russ Franzen with songs of Michigan.

The walking trail will be open for a scenic walk through nature along with different demonstrations all around. There will be free carriage rides and a 1920’s Rustic Dance at 6 p.m. held next door at the Houghton Lake Play House. Admission is just Thirty Cents and only Ten Cents per dance.

Sunday will start off with Church Service and a Pancake Breakfast at 9 a.m. followed by more activities and ‘New Sound in Town’ Barbershop Music, Northern Blend Chorus of Sweet Adalines and more Historical Style Wrestling.

There is however one unique event going on this year that is not like any other year. The president of the Houghton Lake Historical Society Agnes Feldman and her husband Chuck Feldman are going to be renewing their wedding vows for their 50th wedding anniversary while in 1890’s costume. They will be doing this ceremony during Village Days on Sunday for all to see. They will have a private party later in the evening after the festivities have concluded.
