Roscommon Co. educates public on the Gypsy Moth

HOUGHTON LAKE-The Houghton Lake library hosted an event to bring awareness about Gypsy moths and the damage they cause to the environment.

‘We just want to get the word out to keep it as green as possible so tourists and residents themselves can enjoy (the outdoors),’ Roscommon County Gypsy Moth Coordinator Lucille Eisbrenner said.

The Gypsy Moth has the ability to eat more than one square meter of leaf foliage during its caterpillar stage has defoliated millions of acres of trees and shrubs since being brought to the United States in 1869.

Attendees were able to learn about how to identify the moths in their area, their egg masses, and the Roscommon County Suppression Program.

Also attending was Smokey the Bear and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
