Tawas band has new leader

By Elana Warsen

TAWAS – A new director took to the conductor’ podium at the Tawas Community Concert Band (TCCB) rehearsal on April 11. Brian Carter, of Alpena, assumed the role of director/conductor following the retirement of the previous director of 12 years.

‘I’m really excited to be conducting the band,’ Carter said. ‘Everybody has been very friendly. I can’t wait to make music together.’

Carter recently retired from the position of director of bands at Gaylord Middle School in Gaylord. His credentials include a Bachelor of Music Degree in Horn Performance from Olivet College, a Master of Music Degree in Horn Performance from Michigan State University, and a Michigan Certificate in Music Education from Spring Arbor University. He is currently Principal Horn of the Marquette Symphony Orchestra, Gaylord Symphony Orchestra, and Alpena

Orchestra, while also performing with other ensembles throughout Michigan.

‘So far I have heard from several band members that they like his choice of music and his style of directing,’ said Penny LeClair, TCCB public relations person and band member for over 32 years. ‘I’m sure he will be good for the band.’

All area musicians are invited to attend TCCB rehearsals, which occur in the Tawas Area High School band room on Mondays at 7 pm. Musicians must possess their own instruments and be able to read music. For more information, contact Penny LeClair at pleclair@michiganx.net.
