Crawford COA: Announcements and activities for May 2023

The Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center would like to invite you to participate in any of the following activities at their location on 308 Lawndale Street, Grayling.

May events:

Mother’s Day Luncheon – The community is invited to the Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center’s Mother’s Day Luncheon on Thurs., May 11 from 11:30–1 p.m.  On the menu will be roast beef, roasted fingerling potatoes, capri vegetable blend, peaches in strawberry jell-o and strawberry shortcake for dessert.  This meal is dine in only!  The cost of the luncheon is $6.50 for those under 60 and a suggested donation of $3.50 for those 60 years of age or older.

Birthday Lunch – On May 23 we celebrate all the birthdays for people in May.  Come eat lunch with us at 11:30 a.m. and stay for Sweet P’s cupcakes and ice cream!

Caring for the Caregiver – Whether caring for a spouse, partner, family member, friend, or neighbor, helping someone close to you with daily activities and medical tasks can be difficult. Caregivers often feel guilty and alone and have increased risk of developing depression. During this workshop we will: explore the many ways informal caregiving affects a caregivers mental and physical health, learn the importance of self-care for caregivers, practice some strategies for self-care and find out resources for learning more about self-care for caregivers.  The class will meet June 12 at the Crawford County Commission on Aging, Lawndale St, Grayling from 2 – 3 p.m.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers – This class will explore tools for caregivers to take better care of themselves.  Whether caring for a spouse, partner, family member, friend, or neighbor, helping someone close to you with daily activities and medical tasks can be difficult. Caregivers often feel guilty and alone and have increased risk of developing depression. Oftentimes, people don’t get the help they need when dealing with grief, resentment and frustration that comes with caregiving. AARP Safe Driving Class – The AARP in conjunction with the Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center is offering the AARP Smart Driver Course.  This two-day course will be held at 308 Lawndale Street, on May 9 and 10 from 12:30 p.m to 4:30 p.m. This course is designed especially for drivers age 50 and older. You will learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. This should increase your confidence and improve awareness of situations. There are no tests to pass. The cost of the course is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members (all course materials are included in the cost).  Participants need to pay the day of the first class with cash or check. A certificate will be issued, and some insurance companies offer a discount if you complete the course. Participants need to bring their valid Michigan driver’s license and AARP card if they have one.  Come early and eat lunch at the COA from 11:30 a.m-12:30 p.m.  Suggested donation for those age 60+ is $3.50 and price for those under 60 is $6.50.

New to Medicare – Join the Crawford County Commission on Aging on Wed., May 24 at 11 a.m. via Zoom for a presentation that will help demystify the issues surrounding Medicare. Tammy Findlay, Advocacy & Resource Coordinator, will discuss the various parts of Medicare including what is covered or not covered, Medicare Supplement and Prescription Drug Plans, and how Medicare recipients who have low income can get assistance paying for Prescription Drug Plans and the Medicare Part B premium.

Friends of a Feather – Quilting and sewing group meeting the first Tues. of the month, May 2, at 9 a.m.

Bible Study – Every Tues. at 10 a.m., Ron Larson leads a guided study and discussion surrounding Biblical topics.  A special bible study meeting this month on May 30 will have The Mathews Family leading the group in song.

Mahjong – Every Wed.  from 1 -3 p.m. Mahjong players play this fun and challenging game!

Chess Club – The Crawford County Commission on Aging is hosting a Chess Club called Checkmate on Mon.’s from 1 -4 p.m.

Penny Bingo – Bring your pennies to play Penny Bingo every Thurs. from 1 – 3 p.m.

Pantry Bingo – Play bingo every Fri.  from 1 – 3 p.m. for the chance to win pantry items!
Medicine Shoppe Bingo – Thurs., May 4 at 3 p.m play Bingo to win Medicine Shoppe coupons!

Foot Clinic – The Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center is offering a Foot Care Clinic on Mon., May 22 from 12 – 3 p.m.  Appointments are provided by Comfort Keepers where a nurse will soak the feet, trim and file toenails, lotion feet, provide foot care tips, and inspect feet for injury and circulation.  The cost of the service is $25. This payment must be made at the time of booking to secure the appointment. Please bring your own towels (2) and a foot basin to soak feet. The Foot Clinic takes place at the Crawford County Commission on Aging 308 Lawndale, Grayling.  Call 989-348-7123 to make your appointment.

Diamond Dancers – Line dancing group that meets Tuesdays at the Frederic Township Hall at 1:30 p.m. for beginners and later Tuesdays at the Lawndale location at 5:30 p.m. for level 2 and 3. Sundays as well from 3:30 – 6 p.m., Level 2 at 4 p.m. and Level 3 at 5 p.m.  Maze Stephan and Ruth Pilon instructing.

Due to the construction beginning at the New Senior Center Building the Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center would like to invite you to participate in any of the following activities and classes at the Devereaux Memorial Crawford County Library beginning on April 24.

Zumba Gold – Tues. and Thurs. from 10-11 a.m., Nancy Lemmen and Cindy Johnson instructing.

SilverSneakers – Mon. and Wed. from 10-11 a.m., Rich Ferrigan instructing.
Volunteers Needed – Do you like to drive?  Make a difference every week by delivering meals to our older adults who struggle to maintain themselves at home.  Then we’d love to have you as a volunteer to deliver Meals on Wheels.  Delivery days are Mon., Wed., and Fri. and you normally drive once per week.  Mileage reimbursement of $0.40 per mile is provided along with detailed orientation.  Join our team!

Deterra Pouch – With Deterra, drug disposal has just gotten easier and safer.  These free drug disposal pouches are easy and safe to use. The COA has pouches available to pick up.  Stop in to get a pouch at 308 Lawndale St. in Grayling.

Medication Lock Box – Keep your prescription medication safe with a lock box. The COA has medication lock boxes available to pick up.  Stop in to get a box at 308 Lawndale St. in Grayling.
