Kirtland launches community ed classes

ROSCOMMON – Don’t let fall slip into winter without planning some fun! The Community Education department at Kirtland Community College has some fall activities in the works that will be worth staying up north for.

Planned offerings include a Ceramics Fundamentals class, and a luxury bus trip to downtown Traverse City for shopping and more.

The five-week ceramics course, taught by ceramics artist Carrie Gregg, will run on Friday mornings, beginning Oct. 12, at Kirtland Community College’s Art Department on the Roscommon campus.

Whether you’re a beginner who has always wanted to learn to work with clay, or you have some skills and want the chance to work with other artists, you’re welcome to join in. The $79 course fee covers all materials and tools.

Participants will take home their fired creations, and have the opportunity to donate items, if they choose, to a good cause – a fund-raising event to benefit River House Shelter in Grayling.

Did you promise yourself you’d get your holiday shopping done early this year? An Oct. 27 bus trip to downtown Traverse City will be the perfect way to make good on that promise. Spend that Saturday exploring all the downtown shops, TC’s huge open-air Farmers Market, and end up at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons.

Built in 1883, what is now known as the Commons once housed the Traverse City State Hospital. Tours of the Commons are optional and include a Guided Historic Walking Tour of the grounds, or the History, Wine and Beer tour which includes tastings at Left Foot Charley and Earthen Ales.

The bus trip is priced at $29 per person, with tours extra.

To register, go online to www.kirtland.edu/community-education. Seats are limited!

Other fall offerings that are in the works include a Holiday Wreath Making class and a chance to “Ask a CPA” about changes to the tax law.

With the holidays in mind, the Winter Wreath Making class will send participants home with an organically decorated wreath, beautiful enough to hang inside. Participants will receive step-by-step guidance in putting a wreath together from natural materials and how to make the most of Mother Nature’s offerings to decorate it.

Taxes? Isn’t it too soon to think about taxes? Recent changes to the federal tax law may have a big effect on how your 2018 taxes look and it’s never too soon to prepare. Look for more information in the coming months on this timely topic.

Unless otherwise specified, classes are intended for those 18 and older. Pre-registration may be required. For more information on Community Education at Kirtland, or to suggest a future class or topic, feel free to call 989-275-5000, ext. 284, or send e-mail to ce@kirtland.edu.
