Central Lake man charged with attempted murder; Set Grayling house on fire

GRAYLING – A family of four escaped uninjured from a house fire on Nov. 24.

According to a statement from Crawford County Sheriff Ryan A. Swope, deputies and Frederic Township Fire officials were dispatched to a structure fire in Maple Forest Township ant approximately 3:30 a.m.

At the time of the fire, there were four
people inside the residence who were able to escape without injury. The family home was a
total loss.

A juvenile who was inside the home at the time of the fire, told deputies that a
couple hours before the fire, they had heard some strange noises and while seeing what the
noise was, found an individual hiding inside the home.

The juvenile woke up the adults, telling them what had been seen, but no one was located by the family and everyone went back to bed.

A couple hours later the same juvenile woke up everyone in the home stating the house was on fire.

While getting out of the burning home, a
suspect was seen running away from the home.

Investigators contacted Antrim County Sheriff’s Office attempting to identify a possible suspect. Investigators were notified by Antrim County Deputies that earlier in the morning they had handled an accident in their county and the driver was the former boyfriend of one of the individuals inside the home.

The individual involved in the accident was interviewed by investigators, leading to the arrest of Cameron Spencer an 18-year-old male from Central Lake.

Spencer was arraigned Nov. 26 on an 8-count felony warrant. (4 counts Homicide-Attempted Murder, Second Degree Arson, Home Invasion- 1st Degree, and 2 counts MDOP.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and Frederic Township Fire were assisted by the following agencies; MSP Fire Investigator, MSP K9, Antrim County Sheriff’s Office, Beaver Creek Township Fire, Lovell’s Township Fire, and Otsego Lake Township
