Hill resigns as Gerrish chief; Appointed to replace Udy as interim supervisor

By Mark Constance

GERRISH TOWNSHIP – The annual meeting of the Gerrish Township board March 14 held a few surprises.

Supervisor Dave Udy formally announced his resignation as township supervisor after seven years in office. The board voted to appoint Brian Hill to fill out his term. The transition is effective March 30.

The appointment of Hill was made possible when the board accepted his resignation as Gerrish Township police chief.  Hill has served 42 years at the department.

I’ve been fortunate to spend my career in such an amazing community,” Hill said. “You have embraced me and my family. You gave us all the support we needed along the way, as we raised our family here. When I was in need of assistance it was just one call away. I can’t say enough about my time here.”

Hill is optimistic about the state of the township.

I’m proud to have the opportunity to serve in a different way as supervisor. It’s a new challenge, but I’m confident I can help our community to continue moving forward in a positive direction.”

Due to Hill’s retirement, there has been a change in the hierarchy in the department.

Eric Muszynski was named chief; Norm LaBonte was appointed lieutenant; and John Wybraniec was appointed as sergeant of the road patrol.

Hill was honored at the meeting by several representatives of the Northern Michigan Chief’s Association. Attending the event were Harbor Springs Police Chief Kyle Knight, Newaygo Police Chief Georgia Andres and Mackinaw City Police Chief Todd Woods.
