State police man arrest Lansing hit and run suspect

MISSAUKEE COUNTY, – On Monday, January 15, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m. a trooper from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Cadillac Post was dispatched to a hit and run crash involving a pickup truck and a person on a bicycle.

The bicyclist, a 36-year-old man from Shelby, suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for several days.

According to MSP report, the bicyclist was east bound on the shoulder of M-55 near Lachance Road when he was struck by an eastbound pickup truck. The victim stated the truck slowed down after hitting him but then fled east towards Lake City.

The victim was wearing a headlamp and reflective high visibility vest, and his bicycle had reflective markers on it.

Based on damaged vehicle parts recovered at the scene, the State Police were looking for a 2017-2019 Chevrolet or GMC pickup unknown color with chrome plated mirrors. The passenger side mirror was broken off.

A tip was received, and troopers located the vehicle involved at a tow yard in Alma. The vehicle, a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, had damage consistent with the evidence collected at the scene.

An arrest warrant was authorized for the owner of the vehicle, 37-year-old John Lynn Major from Lansing. He turned himself in today at the Missaukee County Jail.

Major was arraigned today on the 84th District Court in Missaukee County on one count Failure to Stop at Scene of Accident Resulting in Serious Impairment of Death. He was given a PR bond.

His next schedule court appearance is on Feb. 29, at 1:30 p.m.
The MSP would like to thank everyone who provided information resulting in an arrest being made in this case.
