MIO – A Mio man was charged with child abuse after an investigation by the Michigan State Police.
According to a Jan. 9 statement from MSP, in November 2023 troopers from the Alpena Post investigated an allegation of child abuse.
Oscoda County Central Dispatch was notified of the incident by a relative of the victim. The relative alleged the suspect had punched and choked the victim.
Child Protective Services were notified, and an interview of the victim and a witness were completed at the Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center in Roscommon.
The suspect, 38-year-old Timothy Joel Peterson from Mio, was interviewed and a report turned over to the Oscoda County Prosecutor’s Office.
An arrest warrant was authorized on Jan. 4, 2024. Peterson turned himself in at the Oscoda County Sheriff’s Office later that same day.
Peterson was arraigned last week in the 81st District Court in Oscoda County on one count Child Abuse Third Degree, and one count Child Abuse Third Degree Committed in the Presence of Another Child.
He was given a $5,000 / 10% cash surety bond. His next scheduled court appearance is on Jan. 18 at 1 p.m.
