Flu season is upon us!

NORTHERN MICHIGAN – National Influenza Vaccination Week is here, and it’s a crucial reminder that the flu season is upon us. The Central Michigan District Health Department, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is urging everyone aged 6 months and older to get their annual influenza (flu) vaccine.

Additionally, this year, the updated COVID-19 vaccine is also recommended, and the good news is that both vaccines can be administered safely in the same visit.

Dr. Jennifer Morse, CMDHD Medical Director, emphasizes that there’s still time to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu this season. Even if you’ve already had the flu this year, getting vaccinated is essential as the vaccine guards against four different strains of the flu, ensuring complete protection.

Preventing both flu and COVID-19 is not just about your health; it’s about safeguarding your community. These vaccines reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization, which eases the burden on our healthcare system. It’s essential to remember that people of all ages, including those in good health, can suffer severe complications from the flu. Certain groups, such as individuals with underlying health conditions, the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems, are at even higher risk.

The Central Michigan District Health Department has made it convenient for residents in Arenac, Clare, Gladwin, Isabella, Osceola, and Roscommon Counties to access flu, COVID-19, and routine immunizations. You can find a clinic near you by visiting VACCINE SITES. In addition to flu and COVID-19 vaccines, their staff can provide information about other vaccines that might be suitable for you.

Getting a flu vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the flu, reduce its severity if you do contract it, and protect those who can’t receive the vaccine. Remember these simple tips to stay healthy this winter: stay home if you’re sick, avoid close contact with sick individuals, consider wearing a mask, practice good hand hygiene, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
