NATIONAL CITY – The Brittle Fire is expected to be fully contained by Friday. It started April 23, 2021 when officials conducted a prescribed burn that got out of control due to high winds.
The fire is located in Iosco County on the Huron Shores Ranger District of the Huron-Manistee National Forest.
The National Forest Service issued an updated status on the fire at 2:02 p.m.

Current Situation: Fire size remains at 5,600 acres. The fire containment remains at 40 percent, with an estimated full containment of April 30, 2021. The fire occurred on nearly all Forest Service land. No structures were lost. Several standing and downed trees continue to burn and smolder on the interior of the fire perimeter.
Today’s Operations: Firefighters will continue to take advantage of the cooler weather to further strengthen containment lines around the fire perimeter and patrol for hot spots and hazard trees along roads and trails. The plan is for firefighters to continue to improve and extend control lines around the fire’s perimeter and begin assessing rehabilitation needs. Crews will be taking inventory of areas impacted by heavy equipment dozer line, road and trail access impediments and damaged signs and fencing.
The Type 2 Eastern Area Incident Management Team assumed command of the Brittle Fire today, bringing additional operational and logistical support to the incident.
Weather: Cooler temperatures today under partly sunny skies with a high near 46 and a chance of afternoon showers. Forecasted winds from the northwest will be 5 to 10 mph.
Safety Messages: All evacuation warnings for residences within and adjacent to the fire area have been lifted. The public is asked to be on high alert for moving fire equipment and personnel along roadways and encouraged to remain away from the fire area to allow firefighters and other equipment to work safely. Fire damaged hazard trees are unstable and can fall unexpectedly. Burned areas are prone to rolling debris and burned-out stump holes. Under wet conditions, ash and needles can make trails slippery. Never fly unmanned aircraft systems (drones) over the fire area, as aircraft operations will continue.

NATIONAL CITY – United States Forest Service officials announced the Brittle Fire is 40 percent contained, but that it would not be fully contained until Friday.
The Brittle Fire, located in Iosco County, started April 23, 2021 from the implementation of prescribed fire operations.
The fire is currently at 5,600 acres. The reduction in acreage is a result of better mapping of the fire. Current fire containment is now at 40 percent, with an estimated full containment date of April 30, 2021. The fire is no longer actively spreading.
There are no reported injuries or structures damaged.
On Saturday, firefighters continued working to improve the line around the fire. Firefighters do this by patrolling along the fireline and extinguishing hot spots, a process known as mopping up. As this work is completed, containment of the fire increases. Firefighters are also working along public trails in the fire area to remove fire damaged hazard trees that may fall into the trail.
Today’s forecast is mostly sunny, with a high temp of 50 degrees. North winds 7-11 mph, with gusts to 22 mph in the afternoon.
The public is asked to remain away from closed areas, to allow the firefighters, engines, helicopters, and other equipment to work safely.
All evacuation warnings for residences within and adjacent to the fire area have been lifted.
Tomorrow morning, the Type 2 Eastern Area Incident Management Gold Team will assume command of the Brittle Fire. The Type 2 Incident Management Team will bring in additional resources to provide logistical and operational support for the suppression of the Brittle Fire.
The Huron-Manistee National Forests urge members of the public not to fly “Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)” or drones over or near the Brittle Fire area. Unauthorized drone flights pose serious risks to firefighter and public safety and the effectiveness of wildfire suppression operations.

The Brittle Fire is located in Iosco County on the Huron Shores Ranger District of the Huron-Manistee National Forests.
The fire is currently at 6,100 acres at 30 percent containment.
On Friday night firefighters took advantage of the cooler weather to further strengthen containment lines around the fire perimeter. Today, firefighters will continue to mop up and improve the fire lines and will be supported in this work by helicopter water bucket drops. The plan is for firefighters to continue to improve and extend control lines around the fire’s perimeter.
Today’s forecast is partly sunny with a high near 57. Forecasted wind speeds are from the south at 5 to 10 mph.
The public is asked to remain away from closed areas, to allow the firefighters, engines, helicopters, and other equipment to work safely.
All evacuation warnings for residences within and adjacent to the fire area have been lifted.
Percentage of fire containment relates to the amount of secured fireline that has been completed around the fire. Although a line has been constructed around the fire, it does not mean that it is 100% contained. Once the line is complete, resources continue to strengthen the line and build on increasing the containment percentage.
