2nd Year MiCareerQuest of N.E. MI Event in Onaway

We regret to inform that due to COVID-19 concerns, we have decided to cancel MiCareerQuest Northeast for 2020.

With the uncertainty of what the next weeks will bring, we feel this decision is in the best interests of the health of the community, the exhibitors, and the students. The event, scheduled for May 21, 2020, was to be held at the Industrial Arts Institute. Over 2,200 middle & high school students from over 24 schools in the region had registered to attend.

MiCareerQuest is a unique, hands-on career exploration event aimed at middle and high school students, where students can participate in interactive exhibits exploring careers in healthcare, technology, construction, and manufacturing. In 2019, over 1,000 northeast Michigan students participated. The purpose of the event is to inspire and direct young people to viable careers in high-demand occupations across the region and help address the need for future talent in these industries.

While it is unfortunate that we need to cancel the event this year, we know this is in the best interests of the community, as we continue to try to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the region.

The 2021 MiCareerQuest Northeast is scheduled for Thursday, May 20, 2021.

THANK YOU!

Onaway – MiCareerQuest Event Coming To Northeast Michigan for the 2nd Year

FACT: 37.5 million Boomers will retire in the next decade. 21 million emerging workers will enter the workforce to replace them. What are we, as a region, doing to encourage our youth to choose careers in Northeast Michigan’s high-demand industries?

On May 21, 2020, the second MiCareerQuest™ Northeast Michigan event will once again expose students to in-demand careers in northeast Michigan. This hands-on career readiness event targets 6th-12th grade students, offering interactive exhibits in construction, healthcare, manufacturing, and technology.  The purpose of the event is to create awareness of the rewarding jobs available in northeast Michigan, many of which have a talent shortage today and are anticipated to have even greater demand in the future. The event will be held at the Industrial Arts Institute in Onaway, MI.

The 2019 MiCareerQuest Northeast event was attended by over 1,000 students from 22 schools across the 11 county region (Alpena, Alcona, Cheboygan, Crawford, Iosco, Montmorency, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle, and Roscommon). The event featured 50 exhibiting organizations, showcasing more than 125 in-demand occupations. Over 80 volunteers from Michigan Works! agencies, partner organizations, local community groups, and other groups assisted with the event to make sure everything ran smoothly. More than 200 working professionals participated in the event, volunteering their time and eager to share their passion for their respective industries. One Johannesburg-Lewiston student’s feedback was, “This was amazing. So many hands on activities and we got to pick what interested us. I have some ideas now on what I might want to be.” Educators loved the event as well. “The best job fair I have ever been to!” said Michael Ratz, Secondary Science Teacher at Wolverine Schools. “The hand on experiences the students and myself were able to do were amazing. Really puts things into perspective.”

MiCareerQuest is unlike anything most students have experienced before. At MiCareerQuest, students explore four industry quadrants and get to touch/feel/use actual tools, machines, and materials that they’d encounter during a day working in that industry. In addition to interactive exhibits, students will have the opportunity to talk one-on-one with experts from the region’s high-demand occupations, learning not only what to expect in a standard “day on the job”, but also learning about the many opportunities available for good careers in northeast Michigan.

Over 2,300 students are expected to attend the 2020 MiCareerQuest event.

Exhibitor registration for the 2020 event is now open. Companies, community colleges, vocational schools, trade associations, and labor organizations are encouraged to register an exhibit and work together to create hands-on activities for the students, allowing them to experience, and hopefully, spark an interest in, the various careers.

There is no cost to individual employers or students to participate in MiCareerQuest. The costs associated with hosting MiCareerQuest are covered by post-secondary educators and event sponsors who understand the importance of exposing young people to career opportunities in our region. MiCareerQuest offers a wide variety of opportunities for businesses and organizations to invest in the future of Northeast Michigan, whether that investment be time and expertise as an exhibitor, or a monetary investment as an event sponsor. In 2019, MiCareerQuest Northeast received a large amount of funding from the Talent Investment Agency and the Regional Prosperity Initiative. These avenues of funding are not available for 2020, so it is imperative that sponsorships are obtained to continue offering the students of northeast Michigan this great event. This event is only possible because of the hard work and commitment of volunteers and exhibitors, and the generous support of event sponsors.
