Forest Service partners with Huron Pines to protect waterways

OSCODA —The Huron-Manistee National Forests and Huron Pines will co-host two free boat washes on Friday, August 2 and Saturday, August 3.

The events are aimed at raising awareness of Aquatic Invasive Species that are threatening Michigan waterways. Aquatic Invasive Species such as milfoil and zebra mussels often outcompete native aquatic wildlife or otherwise dramatically alter the ecosystems that they invade. In doing so, they decrease water quality and limit recreational opportunities on lakes and rivers.

“Most people are aware of Aquatic Invasive Species. They notice a difference in the water over the years when their favorite spots become afflicted,” said East Zone Ecologist Jennifer Falkey. “What they don’t realize is Aquatic Invasive Species are primarily hitchhikers and cleaning your equipment is one of the best things anyone can do to combat the spread.”

Boaters are encouraged to stop by the boat launch at the Mio Pond State Forest Campground in Mio on Friday, August 2 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for a free boat wash.

A second free boat wash will be offered at the Sawmill Point Boat Launch near Oscoda on August 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The boat wash operation is mobile and is trailer mounted. It utilizes high-pressure water to clean invasive species from boats and trailers. The water is collected in a containment mat to prevent recontamination of lakes and rivers. The boat wash is safe for all types and sizes of boats, no matter the finish.

Questions about the boat washes may be directed to the Huron Shores Ranger District at (989) 739-0728 extension 3019.
