ROSCOMMON – Personal safety is the focus of two upcoming community education classes being offered to the public by Kirtland Community College. The college is hosting a Concealed Pistol License course and an introduction to modern self defense.
The CPL/Home Safety Firearms Training is designed to accommodate a wide range of experience, from the beginner who has never handled a handgun, to the experienced shooter. The course has been certified by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and meets the training requirements to apply for a Concealed Carry Permit.
The 12-hour course is set to run from 6 – 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, and then Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. It is a combination of classroom and range instruction on Kirtland’s Roscommon campus and firing range.
Firearms and ammunition will be provided, however, participants may bring their own. Cost is $125 per person.
Those interested in a different type of self defense are encouraged to register for The Right Self Defense for Today, a $10 class offering practical advice on keeping safe in today’s world.
Kirtland’s Director of Public Safety Glenn Gutierrez is offering his expertise in a three-hour course for individuals who are ready to learn many self-protection skills. The course will cover modern safety awareness training, self-defense techniques, prevention strategies and social media need-to-knows.
This course is ideal for high school/college students and adults with common safety concerns. It is a great course for those who are transitioning to independent living.
This is a one-day program on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at Kirtland’s West Branch facility. Participation is limited to 20 students. With enough interest, an afternoon class may be added.
