Old signs on shoulder prompted law allowing removal

ROSCOMMON COUNTY – Trashy signs left on road shoulders over the years prompted the Roscommon County Road Commission (RCRC) to create removal policy a few years back. But it’s causing some grief to political candidates who are finding their signs moved or missing.

The policy was put in place to keep road shoulders, ‘ free of obstacles and encumbrances that adversely affect both the safety and maintenance’ of the roadways. The ordinance notes that, ‘temporary signs placed in the road Right of Way create … a safety hazard to the motorizing public’ and make the jobs of maintenance workers more difficult.’

Specifically, the policy, approved Nov. 14 , 2013 allows the road commission to:

  • Remove all temporary signs within marked clear vision areas;
  • Remove all temporary signs that interfere with the sight distance for vehicles at intersections and commercial driveways; and
  • Remove all temporary signs on county primary and local roads within the right of way, or if not known, either in front of existing utility pole lines or in front of the top of the back slope of the ditch.

No notification is required prior to removal of the signage. If possible, road commission employees will notify sign owners they can pick up the signs at the Roscommon County Road Commission Central Garage. After seven calendar days the signs will be disposed of.

For additional information contact the RCRC at 989-366-0333.
