Spring break success!

HOUGHTON LAKE- Thanks to generous donations from Big Brothers and Big Sisters of The Lakes and Houghton Lake Kiwanis Club, 36 youngsters from as far as Gladwin and West Branch came together at The Northern Center in Houghton Lake. They enjoyed a fun filled day with so many activities, it’s hard to mention them all.

Designed to get all kids involved and to find something they will enjoy, groups were divided into two age groups. While one group was doing gym activities with Basketball Coach Mark Vick, the other group was with Miss Julie learning new games and organized crafts.  The groups did combine a few times to try group activities, like Yoga, Glow in the Dark Cardio Drumming, tie-dye, a volleyball contest and a paper airplane contest. In addition to the activities the children were fed breakfast and lunch, as well as morning and afternoon snacks, highlighted by Root Beer Floats!

For the second year, The Northern Center along with The Fox Den hosted this spring break activity to allow all kids to have a fun break whether they travel someplace exotic or stay locally. Funds were originally donated to initiate a free kids “snow day” program, however with the weather being less than our normal winter, the amount of snow days were too few to mention.  As we head into the end of the school year, and into next year, The Northern Center looks to expand their youth programs, and donations for the FREE snow day program, and ideas are always being sought.
