Oasis of Hope Fundraiser hailed a success

JoJean Thompson thanked all those who attended and those who donated raffle prizes for their silent auction. Seventy prizes were donated for auction by businesses and individuals around Roscommon County, plus a substantial cash donation to OASIS.

HOUGHTON LAKE- Approximately 125 attended the 3rd Annual Celebration Dinner Saturday, February 24 at the Artesia Youth Clubhouse in Houghton Lake.

Following dinner, the M.G. family of Gaylord, expressed their gratefulness to OASIS for the help their family received during the time they became homeless. The family of eight had experienced several hardships, job loss, black mold in their home, a child abducted, and major injuries to the dad. Over the years, the family had helped others in need, never expecting to be on the receiving side themselves. The M.G. family is back in their own home, and thankful to both the Houghton Lake community and their Gaylord community, for all the help and support they received during the nearly three months (or as they say, six hundred sixty-six bed nights) at OASIS House.

OASIS can house eighteen individuals per night. In the past two years, OASIS housed 163 individuals with temporary housing. A considerable increase in need was seen last year.
