HOUGHTON LAKE — The Michigan State Police is once again joining a national effort to help residents safely get rid of expired and unused prescription pills. All 31 MSP posts, including those in Hughton Lake and West Branch, will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday to accept unwanted medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

“By taking a few minutes to clear out expired or unused pills, you are proactively helping to prevent prescription drug misuse and abuse as well as protect the environment,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP.

“Drug Take Back Day allows for an accessible, anonymous, secure and easy way to partner with police to help keep Michigan communities safe.”

All collected pills will be destroyed, with no questions asked. Liquids, inhalers, patches and syringes will not be accepted.

The event gives residents a simple and safe way to clean out medicine cabinets while helping protect families and communities. Nearly 650 pounds of pills were collected during the last Drug Take Back Day in October 2025.

Anyone who cannot take part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day can still anonymously surrender prescription drugs at any MSP post from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Local sheriff departments usually have a prescription drop off box as well, should you miss this event.
