WEST BRANCH – When Annabelle “Anna” Leathorn joined Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG), she hoped it might help her prepare for college and make new connections. She never imagined it would lead to a statewide leadership role and a scholarship that would change her life.
“I didn’t realize the impact it could have,” Anna said.
Her journey began when she met JMG Specialist Ammie Webb while making copies for her Teacher Cadet class. That encounter led her to participate in JMG events, including Legislative Day, where Webb encouraged her to apply for the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) — a competitive leadership program. Despite her hesitation, Anna applied on the spot and was soon accepted.
Encouraged by her success, she applied for the JMG YAC Scholarship, though she doubted her chances.
“I didn’t think I’d get it because of all the amazing students out there,” she said.
But her name was called, and she walked across the stage to accept the award — a moment she won’t forget.
“Crowds are a big fear of mine, so it was nerve-wracking,” Anna admitted. “But Ms. Webb was right there, cheering me on.”
Anna’s path hasn’t been easy. Born to biological parents who didn’t pursue education beyond high school, she was later adopted by a family who encouraged her to dream big. Struggling academically early on, it wasn’t until she discovered a love of reading that things began to change.
“I used to hate school and barely passed,” she said. “Then I found books I actually enjoyed, and I became an all-A student.”
Inspired by her progress, Anna decided to become a teacher. Though she initially aimed for elementary education, her Teacher Cadet experience shifted her focus to high school. She now plans to attend Ferris State University to study secondary education, focusing on English and History.
At Ogemaw Heights, Anna served as Secretary of both JMG and the National Honor Society, Captain of the Mock Trial Team, a Bridge Crew Leader, and a Teacher Cadet. She now serves on the JMG Youth Advisory Council alongside fellow graduate Casey Justice.
“JMG gave me faith in myself I didn’t know I had,” she said. “With the right people behind you, you really can do anything.”
To others who may be struggling, Anna offers this advice:
“Find an army that supports you. No matter the odds, you can do it.”
