Managing concerns about falls program being offered

REGION – Each year, millions of older adults fall. In fact, more than one out of four older adults fall each year, but less than half tell their doctor. Falling once doubles your chances of falling again. This causes many older adults to have concerns about falling and have consequently restricted their activities to avoid them.

A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels for participants. The program emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls. “A Matter of Balance” can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent.

A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. By attending eight, two-hour sessions held once a week, participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

A Matter of Balance is for anyone who is concerned about falls, has fallen in the past, and has restricted activities because of falling concerns, or is interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength.

Classes for the A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls program will begin Wednesdays, August 3rd, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Cheboygan County Council on Aging (1531 Sand Road, Cheboygan MI 49721). A workbook is provided, and donations are appreciated but not required.
