Music, food and remembrance at Sanford Museum

SANFORD – Nothing heals like music, food and sharing from the soul. Coleman Faith United Methodist Church invites you to come out to the Sanford Centennial Museum on Saturday, May 21 for an afternoon of music to honor the survivor spirit across the flood-affected communities and the volunteers who have been there every step of the way to help with rebuilding and recovery. The performances are part of the Sanford Rising events to mark the second anniversary of the flooding. In addition to great music, there will be time for sharing stories and local food vendors to keep everyone nourished.

Six groupings of local musicians will take turns performing familiar music, original compositions and tunes to get your feet moving! The tunes begin at 3 p.m. and continue through the afternoon interspersed with stories of people’s experiences, losses, victories, discoveries and recovery as offered by survivors and volunteers. Faith UMC workers have contributed more than 1200 hours since Day One to help flood victims recover and rebuild. The event will end with a drum circle at 7 p.m. Food vendors including Elvira’s and AT Concessions will be available for your dining pleasure, and don’t forget to tour the museum buildings!

A bit about the performers – several will share songs they have written about the flood event.

Bay City native, musician and pastor Dusty Ballard (aka DustyBonez) will start the day with original and faith-filled songs. Steve Roth and Jessica Roth will come from Mt. Pleasant to contribute classic covers and entertaining tunes. John Poma and Sara Glynn-Dishaw have joined together as Apple Valley Music to offer their musical talents and skills to bring joy to listeners. John’s 50 years of guitar experience joins with Sara’s keyboard prowess to cover a wide variety of music styles to fit the occasion. Kristine Goodwin is a singer/songwriter and a flood survivor from Midland who performs acoustic alternative music in folk, country, and blues styles. She will perform a blend of originals and covers. Circuit Band out of Saginaw features Corey Ingram, Tony McCray and Steve McCray, who will bring blues and funk to get people on their feet. This event wouldn’t be complete without one of Sanford’s favorite entertainers, Johnny Hunt, to bring some light and fun into the day. The drum circle led by Marianne Turnquist will finish the day and certify the cure.

Donations to support the musicians will be accepted, with $10/person suggested.
