The Rosevar Brothers Harvesting Ice at Clear Lake

ROSE CITY – Prior to refrigeration, keeping food cold was a difficult task. Ice was cut from Northern lakes and hauled across the country in railcars filled with hay and sawdust to slow the melting process. Pictured here are the Rosevar brothers harvesting ice on Clear Lake with a unique circular saw blade. The blade resembles those used to cut the pine trees that covered Northeast Michigan.
