West Branch speaks for animals in need

By Christine Swiderski

WEST BRANCH – Margaret Damon and Emily Cameron co-founded Laney’s Voice Rescue in May 2016.

Laney, a female Newfoundland, was their first rescue. They were new to the animal rescue world, and money for Laney’ care was coming out of their pockets. Margaret contacted South Central Newfoundland Society, which took over Laney’ care. Just like that, Margaret and Emily had become a voice for Laney.

Since then, Margaret and Emily have served as advocates for the many animals that have come into their care. It took them over a year for the final approval for 501C status. In May they received their EIN # which qualified them to work as a nonprofit rescue.

Dedication and a love for all animals give these two tenacious women the motivation they need to find forever homes for the pets they rescue.

As a newly formed rescue the challenge is tremendous. In addition to caring for animals, the duo works constantly to stay connected with other rescues, coordinate events to get the word out about their rescue, and giving information to those who may not have the means to take care of their pets.

‘We are a new rescue just starting out. Our out of pocket expenses at this time is over $2,000,’ Margaret said. ‘For us it is not about the money. It is about the animal.’
Margaret and Emily depend on volunteers to foster the dogs and cats, as well as donations for feeding and caring for the animals.

‘We watch every penny,’ Margaret said, adding that the organization goes through 50 pounds of cat food every three days. ‘We are amazed how much goes into this. This is just the tip of the iceberg. You have to look after their medical needs. This is a daunting task we have taken on’

Needed donations include leashes, tick medications, de-wormers, cat nip, canned and dry dog food, puppy and cat food, puppy or kitten replacement milk, dog and cat crates, carries, dog houses, fencing, non-poly filled blankets, animal nursers, kits/bottles/droppers, pet first aid items, gift cards to pet supply stores, cleaning supplies, Rubbermaid totes, and more. Contact Laney’ Voice Rescue for a complete list.

Emily said ‘A $5 bag of cat litter, makes the biggest difference.’

‘No animal leaves our care until they have all their medical needs taken care of, ‘Margaret said. ‘When we take a dog in it costs Laneys Voice $180 to tend to these needs. The adoption fee for a dog is $165. Donations and fund raisers make up the rest.’

‘Not just anyone on the corner adopts the cat or dog,’ Emily said. ‘We want homes that will continue to meet the needs of the animal.’

Laney’s Voice Rescue is located at 498 E. State Rd. in West Branch. Call them at 989-709-0696, or visit them online at laneysvoicerescue.wix.com/mysite or facebook.com/laneysvoice.
