Letter to the editor: Feds cut of food funding ends SNAP-ED

To the editor:

Thank you, partners, SNAP-Ed made a difference in Michigan.

In July, the federal government voted to end funding for SNAP; therefore, federal funding for SNAP-Ed will cease at the start of the federal fiscal year, October 1. Without a way to replace the $10 million needed to continue the programming, it will be sunsetting here in Michigan.

While this marks the end of a chapter, it also gives us a moment to reflect on the incredible impact this program has had across Michigan. From helping families make healthier food choices to supporting youth in building lifelong wellness habits, SNAP-Ed has reached thousands of Michiganders with education, compassion and community support.

The following is a story that shows what SNAP-Ed made possible:

Thanks to SNAP-Ed, a participant who initially believed that all vegetables were bland and nutritionally identical experienced a meaningful shift in perspective. At the start of the series, he shared that he only ate corn and potatoes, dismissing other vegetables as boring and unnecessary. Through SNAP-Ed’s engaging nutrition education, he learned how different colors of vegetables support various aspects of health and how flavor can be enhanced through preparation techniques.

During the vegetable-focused lesson, he became visibly interested—asking questions, participating actively, and even helping prepare the class recipe. The following week, he proudly shared his grocery list, which included broccoli and colorful peppers marked with stars for a new stir-fry recipe. By the end of the series, he had tried twelve new vegetables, discovered new favorites, and committed to “making it through the whole rainbow.”

Though SNAP-Ed is ending, MSU Extension remains committed to supporting Michigan families through other programs and partnerships. We invite you to stay connected and explore new ways we can continue to serve your community.
