VIEW FROM THE COMFY CHAIR–The Vernier family loves our pets. We have enjoyed our dogs, cats, crayfish, horses, guinea pigs (of course) and our bunny rabbits. One of the challenges of sharing your life with pets is that their lifespan is not as long as ours, so often we have a difficult time when they go to ‘Pet Heaven!’
Pope Francis stated that our pets do indeed go to heaven, so I for one am hoping he is correct, after all he is infallible right?
And so the end came for our beloved bunny rabbit, ‘Two Sock’.’ He journeyed to ‘Bunny Heaven’ last week. For the past eight years we have shared our home with a house bunny. No not like the one in the movie ‘House Bunny’, there are no playboy connections. But we did have an authentic trained to the kitty litter, non-chewing, lovable brown house bunny. Our bunny was named ‘Two Socks’ because he has two white socks on his front feet, just like the wolf in the Kevin Costner movie ‘Dances with Wolves.’
I would like to share some memories with you of our ‘Two Socks!’
On one of the colder evenings one winter, I was seated in my comfy chair covered with a warm throw blanket, watching one of my favorite older movies ‘Ice Station Zebra’ with my family. I love this movie and watch it every winter. The sub-zero temperatures blended with the cold war crisis is-well, chilling.
As the movie progressed I noticed that the room seemed to be getting colder and colder. I thought it might be that I was just getting into the movie, the surround sound, the cold outside, the arctic winds blowing in the movie, I thought I was just imagining the temperature drop in the room. I got up to make some popcorn and I noticed that it really was getting colder.
I followed the cold breeze to the laundry room and noticed that the door to the garage had blow open. Also the garage door was open. I closed both and went on my way to make popcorn. I asked who left the doors open, and the question came up, where is the bunny?
Yes Two Socks had escaped. This was not the first time that this has happened, a couple of years ago he escaped from his home in our garage during the traditional college spring break. He was gone on his vacation for two weeks. He was missed, and there was much sadness and hoping the bunny would be found.
He showed up at our neighbors, he somehow managed to get into their female bunny’ cage, and the two of them enjoyed spring break activities together. We received a call from our neighbor to come and get our bunny quickly before something happened. I am not sure what they were concerned about. But we had bunny home again.
On this occasion my wife went out into the night with a flashlight and found bunny tracks. We sent our little white dog Princess out to find the bunny, and much to our surprise, she did. He was hiding at one of our neighbors in the brush.
My wife whistled and called his name out loud ‘Two Socks, come here.’
The bunny hopped right two her, she scooped him up and brought him safely back into the house. My family was very happy, it seemed bunny was very happy. I made some popcorn, and we resumed the movie. All was right in the Vernier household again.
‘Two Socks’ spent hours every day with us in our home, he was a very happy bunny. He just loved to run around, pester kitty cat, jump up on the couch to sit in my wife’ lap, and nap under the kitchen table. He would always come to my wife when she called his name. He was very soft, he loved to be held and petted.
I’m hoping I will see him again with all of the Vernier pets that have lived with us and taken the journey ahead of us. Rest In Peace ‘Two Socks!’
