NORTHERN MICHIGAN – Consumers Energy today announced significant progress in its commitment to expand renewable energy options for more Michiganders. Earlier this year, Michigan’s largest energy provider launched “Green Giving,” a first-of-its-kind program enabling anyone to contribute to a sustainable energy future.
“Green Giving” helps income-qualified customers save money while accessing the financial and environmental benefits of renewable energy through community-sponsored contributions. Regardless of income or location, customers can now rely on Consumers Energy—and each other—to be part of the energy transition.
“Green Giving is a game-changer! We’re thrilled to empower our most vulnerable customers with access to sustainable energy products which will enable cost savings. Together, we’re making Michigan’s energy future brighter for everyone,” said Lauren Snyder, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president, chief customer and growth officer.
Here’s how it works:
Sponsored dollars are used to fund low-income customer subscriptions tied to renewable projects.
Consumers Energy and community agency partners enroll eligible customers.
These projects generate clean electricity, which is sold back into the grid.
The value from those sales is passed along to enrolled customers as $10–$20 monthly bill credits.
Homeowners and renters earning 200% or less of the federal poverty level are eligible. Consumers Energy is working to help these customers reduce energy use, save money, and protect the environment.
So far, more than 2,828 customers have enrolled through Consumers’ My Personalized Offerings tool or automatic enrollment. Nearly 12% of enrollees are in environmental justice communities—those most in need. Consumers Energy aims to expand eligibility to serve even more residents.
To date, the program will generate 7,739 MWh of clean energy—equivalent to:
320 million smartphones charged
1,590 tons of waste recycled
4,515 acres of U.S. forests preserved in one year
506,443 gallons of gasoline displaced
