STANDISH — The public is invited to attend the Honoring Saganing Traditional Powwow on June 6-7 at the Powwow Grounds, located at 2750 Worth Road in Standish.
Hosted by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan, the annual gathering celebrates Native American culture through traditional dancing, drumming, singing and community fellowship. The event is open to the public and welcomes visitors of all ages.
Activities begin Saturday, June 6, with dancer and drum registration from 12-12:45 p.m. Grand Entry is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by the retiring of the flag.
Sunday, June 7, starts with breakfast at the Saganing Tribal Center at 9 a.m. Dancer and drum registration will take place from 12-12:45 p.m., followed by Grand Entry at 1 p.m. Sunday’s activities also include a Hand Drum Contest and the retiring of the flag.
Admission is $3 daily for adults and $1 for children. Children ages 12 and younger are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Special dance categories are planned for participants ages 17 and older, including Woodland Men’s, Northern Traditional, Jingle Dress and Women’s Appliqué. Youth categories for ages 16 and younger include Woodland Junior, Grass Dance, Jingle Dress and Girls Appliqué.
Mike Medway will serve as emcee. Gabe Cleveland is the arena director. Ray Cadotte is the head veteran, and head dancers will be selected daily. Wind Eagle will serve as host drum, with Woodland Stream and Sturgeon Bay participating as invited drums. Audio services will be provided by Everything Audio Visual.
