Shop unique handmade creations in downtown Kalkaska

KALKASKA- The Kalkaska Festival of the Arts debuts this weekend in downtown Kalkaska at Railroad Square. Open from 10 a.m. -5 p.m. daily. Admission is FREE to the public. Featuring ceramics, candles, photography, small batch dog treats, mixed media and more. Come out to support artisans and find the perfect new wall art, functional art or tourist take home treasures.

With the recent completion of Railroad Square, downtown Kalkaska has the perfect space to host a festival. Situated right off US 131, you can shop, enjoy tasty food from the Food Truck court and enjoy live dance performances. This is a family friendly event with a FREE kids make and take fish project, dance classes and even fresh popped kettle corn.

Tyler from Spectral Stone uses lapidary saws and polishers to slab, trim and polish unique semi-precious stones like larimar and malachite. Each piece is wrapper for pendants, rings or earrings using sterling silver or gold.

Amanda Straeffer’s ceramic creations capture a moment or feeling of the places that she has traveled to in hopes that the viewer could also experience what a specific location is like. From the waves of the ocean, to the mountains of Guatemala, her work ranges from vases with wave cut out designs to planters that have mountains and lakes carved on them. Through the use of carving, cut outs, and decals a sense of wonder and appreciation of nature is evoked.

The Traverse City Dance Company returns to Kalkaska as part of its 2023 tour. There will be a kids free class at 3 p.m. Sunday and you also get a chance to watch a free demonstration from professional dancers during a warmup class. The performance features original choreography, live music and professional dancers from around the country. Following the performance there will be a Q & A session with the artists.
