The 44th Annual Celebration of Village Days

HOUGHTON LAKE – The Houghton Lake Historical Society hosted the 44th Annual Village Days on August 5, 6, and 7. The Village represents life of the mid-to-late- 1800’s through the turn of the 20th century.

As events began on Friday all 13 buildings opened up for tours and be a part of the history. Each building had something different to offer everyone who came through the Village. There were a few new activities this year including wood carving demonstrations, old fashion wrestling, and a pet adoption through Laneys Voice Rescue.

Also new this year, people could get a sliced circle of wood from the wood carver, (called ‘cookies’) and then take it to the Black Smith building where Mike Richardson of St. Helen would burn the brand ‘HL 2016’ onto it. This was the first brand Richardson had made and it allowed the people to take home a souvenir of their trip to the Village.

Throughout the weekend there were many forms of entertainment such as live Folk music, storytelling, a barbershop quartet and the northern blend choir of Sweet Adelines. Friday night there was a pig roast and Saturday night a 1920’s dance celebrating the 89th year of the Historical Playhouse which began as ‘Johnson’s Rustic Dance Palace’. Ending Sunday night’s festivities was the renewal of vows ceremony for the Feldman’s 50th wedding anniversary in the Historic Chapel.

This year brought with it a large number of ‘new comers’ to the Village where they enjoyed the traditional activities and games. There were horse drawn carriage rides, demonstrations of many kinds, and contests.
