Raymond Hughes, 89, of Hale

Raymond D. Hughes, age 89, of Hale, MI. passed away at his home on Long Lake on June 9, 2026. He was born on February 26, 1937, in Ecorse, MI., to the late Russell and Mildred Hughes. Raymond was one of four children born to Russell and Mildred.

Raymond was raised in the Ecorse area and graduated high school there. He later went to work for the school system in Taylor, MI., in the transportation and maintenance division. It was a job he loved but eventually retired after 35 years. He and his wife, Clara, then retired to their beautiful home on Long Lake.

Raymond and Clara made every day special around their home. Around the area Ray was nicknamed, “Spazman,” because of his endless energy. Ray’s neighbors could always count on him to help fix and repair practically anything. He loved being outdoors and was a dedicated deer hunter too. At home he loved boating on Long Lake with family and friends all summer long. He and Clara were married for 70 years before losing her in 2025 to Alzheimer’s.

Raymond is survived by his children, Russell Hughes, Richard (Maria) Hughes, Robin (Thomas) Hughes-Longroy; sister-in-law, Roseanne (Richard) Miller; brother, Elwin; grandchildren, Jocelyn, Stephanie, Alexandra; great-grandchildren, Evelynn, Harper, and niece, Dawn Ann Miller-Lawrence.

Raymond is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Darryl and Arthur.

Family will hold services for Raymond on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at the Buresh Funeral Homes in Hale. Visitation will be from 2:00pm – 5:00pm with a Masonic Lodge honor service at 4:00pm. Burial will take place the following day at Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Clara and the dedicated spouses like Raymond who care for them.
