Consumers, Confluence expected to support Marathon after dam sale

By Mark Constance

NORTHERN MICHIGAN – With Consumers Energy’s sale of its 13 Michigan dams to Confluence Hydro of Maryland, the utility says it will continue its long-standing commitment to the AuSable River Canoe Marathon.

“Consumers Energy is the (current) owner and operator of all 13 dams. We will continue sponsoring the AuSable River Canoe Marathon, including the 2026 event,” Consumers Spokesperson Trisha Bloembergen said.

Consumers has been a major sponsor of the marathon since 2012.

Confluence Hydro spokesperson Dana Whyte said the company recognizes the race’s significance to Grayling and other AuSable River communities.

“As the transaction moves forward, Confluence Hydro looks forward to meeting with stakeholders about opportunities such as the canoe race and discussing how best we can partner together,” Whyte said.

“It’s Confluence Hydro’s intent to help facilitate and support the race.”

Phil Weiler, spokesperson for the AuSable River Canoe Marathon, said the partnership with Consumers has been strong.

“We’ve worked together well for years now,” Weiler said. “The marathon isn’t changing. We’re looking to continue and extend that relationship with Consumers and Confluence. And we look forward to seeing them at the marathon this year.”
