GRAYLING – Kirtland Community College has appointed John Thiel as its new Vice President of Academic Affairs. Thiel, who began at Kirtland in 2001 as a History and Humanities instructor, has dedicated more than two decades to the institution.
“After reviewing a pool of 27 candidates, we are thrilled that John rose to the top and accepted the position,” said Kirtland President Dr. Gary Roberts. “With a long history of being involved in academic programming at Kirtland, we could not have hoped for a better person to fill this position.”
Thiel’s career reflects steady professional growth, academic leadership, and commitment to student success. As a faculty member, he became known for his engaging instruction and passion for the liberal arts. In 2022, he was named Dean of Arts and Sciences, overseeing a broad academic portfolio and leading efforts in curriculum development.
“It means a lot to me to have been chosen from a national search by my institution,” said Thiel. “It shows a lot of confidence in my abilities and hopes for the future of the position and my role in the college.”
In his new role, Thiel will lead academic operations including curriculum planning, instructional quality, accreditation, faculty affairs, and student services. He will collaborate with executive leadership, faculty, and community partners, and serve as a liaison to state and national agencies.
Under Thiel’s leadership, Kirtland expanded dual enrollment, online learning, and student success programs. He is known for putting students at the center of decision-making and for his belief in the mission of community colleges.
“I have 24 years and counting experience here. Twenty years on faculty, three and a half years as dean in Arts and Sciences, so I am invested in this college,” said Thiel. “I’ve seen Kirtland through many ups and downs and think it has a bright future and hope that by choosing me, the search committee thinks I can play a vital role in that future.”
His accomplishments at Kirtland include:
- History and Humanities Instructor (2001–2021)
- Faculty Department Chair (2008–2012)
- Academic Program Curriculum Chair (2021–present)
- Dean of Arts and Sciences (2022–2025)
- Michigan Community College Leadership Academy (2023–2024)
- President, Michigan Liberal Arts Deans (2024–present)
- Key partnerships with CMU and Grand Valley State University
Thiel holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in History from Michigan State University and is pursuing a doctorate in Community College Leadership from Ferris State University. He’s also active in professional organizations including the American Historical Association and MCCCAO.
As Kirtland expands its presence in northern Michigan, Thiel’s appointment signals a strong commitment to academic innovation. His tenure began July 1.
“I think one of the things that’s been good about Kirtland in all my time here is that we have been really adaptable,” Thiel said.
“Community colleges, in general, are usually very adaptable because they serve students who want to transfer to four-year institutions, they serve in trades education, serve area workforce needs, and also in health sciences programs. For that, we really need to keep our finger on the pulse of many agencies.
“I think because we are small and because we are so plugged into the local area, we have been able to do that well over the years.”
“That’s a goal of mine throughout my time here and into the future. It’s to do whatever I can do to help be one of the main faces of this college in the public as we continue to adapt and grow.”
