Letter to the Editor: In response to Ms. Dennis’s letter to the editor dated 6/4/24

“Rather than waste more time continuing to argue about the sewer, let’s all put our energies toward making the sewer happen as quickly and affordably as possible.

Ms. Dennis asks why we continue to argue about the sewer. Does it ever occur to the pro-sewer advocates that they set this whole situation up for an argument by every action that they have taken since the beginning of their STEP sewer project? Now that they are losing this argument, they are offering the public an opportunity to surrender to their plan and “put our energies” into supporting the STEP sewer. Seriously?

There was never enough free money floating around to make a dent in this STEP sewer project. Blaming the victims of the STEP for failure to get free money is a strange way of soliciting their support.

The fact that GLUA and township officials have already squandered money and so we should join that folly makes no sense. We don’t need to throw good money after bad. Part of the objective of the STEP campaign has been to rush forward and spend money, and then turn around and use their waste of money as a justification for digging this debt hole even deeper. The STEP sewer is a bad idea and will wreck Higgins Lake by over-development.

A logical private septic system ordinance to upgrade waste treatment makes sense. The current Lyon ordinance has several serious flaws that need fixing. That won’t happen under the present leadership. That’s why we have elections – to recruit people for public service who are more public service oriented.

I notice that on the rare occasions that STEP sewer advocates step out of the shadows they choose to repeat their same pitch over and over, and rarely respond to any criticisms publicly expressed by those who they have shut out of the process. We can expect more cable TV self-promoting ads from the Higgins Lake Foundation and more misleading statements from their representatives until this project goes away.
