CHARLEVOIX – Grayling’ girls freshman team overcame a first half deficit to defeat Charlevoix 42-31 on Feb. 3.

Coach Sarah Frisbee said the team played well on both ends of the floor.

‘We executed our trapping pressure defensive well which created transition offense,’ she said. ‘The girls saw the court well and distributed the ball great while executing our offensive (and). showed great perseverance against a much-improved team.’

She said the team trailed the entire first half.

‘We trailed the entire first half, but never quit hustling and working hard,’ Frisbee said. ‘We lead at the end of the third quarter by two and then dominated the final eight minutes only allowing them to score five points while putting in 14 of our own.’

Vanessa Nielson led the team with 22 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Isabel Duba had eight points, five assists and two steals. Jordyn Schwartz had a balanced game with six points, three rebounds, four assists, nine steals and three blocks.

Louise Bedwell scored four points and pulled down four boards. Fah Phachan scored two points and had an assist.

Georgia Barber 2 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 blocks

Eleanor Pooley and Hannah Childers each pulled down one rebound, and Makenzie Helsel had one pick.

Ogemaw Heights 25

GRAYLING – The Lady Vikings posted a 33-25 non-conference win over Ogemaw Heights Jan. 24.

Coach Sarah Frisbee said she continues to be impressed with the growth of the team.

‘Every single player knows how important their role is when they step on the court, especially on the defensive end. As a team, they provide such pressure that we had 24 steals which leads to good transition offense,’ she said.

She noted the play of Isabel Duba, who finished the game with eight points and four steals.

‘She provided great court leadership playing the point offensively and initiating our defensive trap. We depend on our post players heavily in the offense and to rebound, and they stepped-up tonight,’ Frisbee said.

Leading the way was Emma Mertes with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals. Other stats include:
Vanessa Nielson with nine points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks; Jordyn Schwartz – 3 points, three rebounds, five steals; Louise Bedwell – 2 points, 10 rebounds; Hannah Childers – one point, one rebound, and two steals; Georgia Barber had three steals; Eleanor Pooley had one board and one pic; and Makenzie Helsel and Fah Phachan each had a steal.

Traverse City West 35

Grayling 34

TRAVERSE CITY – Coach Sarah Frisbee said this was a touch loss.

‘They played with such desire and determination and pushed a great team probably harder than they have been pushed all season. Unfortunately, we came up a little short at the end of the game, but we executed our game plan effectively.
‘We had a tough third quarter only scoring one point, but we moved the ball really well and took good shots, they just weren’t falling. Even after that low scoring third, we took a one point lead going into the fourth quarter because of our tenacious defense. After a very evenly matched final period, they were able to convert on a last second shot to win.’

Stats include:

Emma Mertes – 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 steals; Vanessa Nielson – 7 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals; Jordyn Schwartz 4 points, 2 steals, and 4 assists; Georgia Barber – 4 points, 2 rebounds and 3 steals; Hannah Childers – 3 points, 4 steals; Isabel Duba -2 points, 2 rebounds and 4 steals; Louise Bedwell – 3 rebounds, and 4 steals; Eleanor Pooley – 2 points and 2 steals/
