Spencer, Noreyko take first places at Caro

CARO – Roscommon took six wrestlers for the match in Caro on Saturday, Dec. 16 and four of them placed in what was the Bucks’ best outing of the young season. The seeds of that success have been present since day one, though.

Leading off the day for the Bucks was Brendan Spencer who brought home a first place medal. The highlight of Spencer’s day was pinning a wrestler from Vassar who came into the match ranked fourth by the coach’s poll.

Also earning a first place for the Bucks was Ethan Noreyko. En route to the championship match, Noreyko defeated the returning state runner-up at 125 pounds last year. They wrestled at 150 for this meet, however.

Roscommon freshman Kolby Tyler came away with a fourth place finish at 135 pounds, while the other freshman, Ethan Winegardner, took a sixth place at 103 pounds.

Coach Matt Morley has two consistent wrestlers right now who can be counted on to score six points every time out in Spencer and Noreyko. Both are undefeated so far and have beaten highly ranked opponents.

“Kolby Tyler … I actually wrestled with his older brother, Mitch Tyler,” Morely said. “Kolby is one of the 11 Tylers that are going to be coming through.

“He wrestled all through the youth program, and is going to be a solid. He’s strong as an ox, and is going to be right up there with the best of them. Same thing with Ethan Winegarder. He placed very high in youth wrestling. He just needs to build up some confidence.

“Overall, I’ve got no complaints. A couple of the older kids who did not place at Caro, they’re in very tough weight classes. I was looking for them to work their butts off, and that’s exactly what I got.”

Although the Bucks lost, 48-30 to Ogemaw Heights in an earlier match, several individuals stood out. Winegardner at 103, Spencer at 119 and Tyler at 140 all recorded pins.

The Bucks lost a tough, 36-33 decision to Mio in their first dual match of the season, but had several outstanding individual efforts, including Winegardner, Spencer, Tyler and Noreyko who each recorded pins in their matches.
