Vike’s snap losing streak against the Bobcats

GRAYLING – Grayling’s girls basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 58-42 victory over visiting Houghton Lake in a non-conference game to end the regular season.

It comes at a good time for the Vikings, who are next going to see action in the MHSAA district tournament on their home floor against Houghton Lake (1-19) on Monday night at 7 p.m.

The Vikings dominated all but the second quarter against the Bobcats in finishing the regular season with a 6-14 record overall.

Grayling finished 2-12 in the Lake Michigan Conference.

Grayling’s defensive pressure limited the Bobcats to less than 10 points in the first quarter, and the Vikings opened the game with a 16-5 lead after one.

Houghton Lake came storming back in the second quarter, however, outscoring the Vikings, 18-10 and cut the Grayling lead to just three points, 26-23 at the half.

The Vikings regrouped at halftime, and came out for the third quarter with a stingy defense that allowed them to outscore the Bobcats, 16-6 and extend their lead to 13 points, 42-29 heading into the fourth quarter. Grayling had a 16-12 edge in the final eight minutes.

“We did pretty well overall,” Vikings coach Daniel Brandt said. “We got into a little foul trouble in the second quarter and put them on the line.

“They shot 16 free throws and knocked down 11 of them in the second quarter. We just got a little too handsy, and didn’t move our feet well enough and they closed the gap.

“But, we cleaned it up in the second half. We only committed four fouls in the second half. We cranked up the defensive intensity, but had active hands deflecting passes. We really started getting back into our offense the second half.”

Pacing the Vikings in scoring against Houghton Lake were senior Jasmine Youngblood sophomore Rylan Finstrom, who each scored 15, while junior Lauren Hartman added 11 while senior Mackenzie Castle chipped in with eight.

Houghton Lake was led by Hailey Watson and Hannah Peel who had 14 points apiece.
