Meijer State Games-Hanson Hills Classic MI-CUP Race

By Ron Ellerman II

FREDERIC – The Hanson Hills Classic MI-CUP race was held at Forbush Corner cross-country skiing on Feb 18, 2018 to help out Hanson Hills Recreation Area that had course troubles due to recent warm-up that left their race course with bare spots and unable to reset any safe/skiable surface. The race had 79 competitors ranging in age from 19 to 80 years-old. The race is timed with 15 second interval start times so the racers do not know their standing until the race is complete and times are posted. The race is 14 kilometers long and is 1 of 12 races held throughout Michigan. The race winner was Sam Holmes competing in the 20-29 year-old group that started 19th with a time of 31:32.7 seconds. The oldest competitor was Bill Haefner competing in the 80+ year-old group that started 76th and finished 34 out of 79 with a time of 43:24.2 seconds. All race results can be found and tracked on www.racesplitter.com.
