REGION– Michigan residents are once again being asked to help scientists locate summer bat roosts through the Michigan Bat Roost Monitoring Program. From barns and bridges to trees and bat houses, bats across the state are settling into warm-weather homes where they rest and raise their young. Last year, community members submitted more than 130 roost reports from 52 counties, helping researchers better understand Michigan’s bat populations. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan Natural Features Inventory encourage residents to report sightings of bats entering or leaving roosts around sunset.

Michigan is home to nine bat species, including several threatened or endangered species impacted by white-nose syndrome.
