ROSCOMMON – Established in 1997, the Gahagan Nature Preserve celebrated 25 years of protecting diverse wildlife habitat and providing educational services in northern Michigan today with its open house.

The mission of Gahagan will soon be enhanced by 34 acres however, due to the generosity of six independent, anonymous donors with an interest in protecting this critical wetland habitat.

The 34 -acre wetland parcel, located on the northeast boundary of the property and located along County Road 100,  serves as a crucial filtration system for Tank Creek, part of the headwaters of the Au Sable river’s south branch.

“We are humbled here at the preserve that these individuals took such a vested interest in preserving this piece of land,” said Director Tracy Bosworth. “Through the generosity of these donors, Gahagan is able to build upon our mission of protecting diverse wildlife habitat.”

Gahagan envisions future development plans for the parcel to include the addition of boardwalk trails to allow for recreational opportunities, a wedding chapel and interpretive signage to educate the public on the importance of wetland habitat.
