CHEBOYGAN COUNTY – Those who are interested in the development of a new boating access site on the former site of the privately owned Black River Marina in Cheboygan County are encouraged to attend a public open house Tuesday, Sept 20, in Cheboygan.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources acquired the property with a grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund.
The new boating access site will be located on the Upper Black River, approximately a quarter mile from Black Lake. The development plan includes:
- A new concrete boat launch ramp and new skid pier with a lane on each side.
- A new parking lot that will accommodate 34 vehicle-and-trailer parking spaces and four vehicle-only parking spaces.
- An existing carry-in launch popular with kayakers, paddle boarders and canoers.
- A waterless boat wash station and information panels educating boaters on invasive species.
Open house, feedback details
The open house will run 3 to 6 p.m. Sept. 20 at the proposed site, 8091 Viau Road in Cheboygan. People are invited to stop in at any time to view the proposed development plan, share feedback and ask questions of DNR staff.
After the meeting, the proposed plan will be available at Michigan.gov/DNRWaterways. People can send comments to Dave Stempky, Cheboygan Field Office manager for the DNR Parks and Recreation Division, at StempkyD1@Michigan.gov through Sept. 30.
