Torch River Bridge open house to discuss boating access site project

NORTHERN MICHIGAN – Anyone interested in a proposed enhancement project at the Torch River Bridge boating access site, in Antrim County, is encouraged to attend an upcoming open house in Kewadin. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is seeking public input on plans for this popular site located at the mouth of Torch River on the south end of Torch Lake.

The open house will run 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at Milton Township Old Town Hall, 7268 Cairn Highway. People are invited to stop in at any time to view the plan, share feedback and ask questions of DNR staff. A brief overview presentation will take place at 6 p.m.

The proposed project got its start when the DNR acquired an additional 1.5 acres of adjacent property in 2020. The current proposed layout concept includes:

  • Parking spaces for vehicles with trailers.
  • Boater pedestrian routes.
  • A dual launch ramp.
  • A nonmotorized carry-down launch with parking.
  • A vault toilet.
  • Improved traffic patterns off Torch Lake Drive.

The demolition of existing buildings on the new property took place this past May. Construction is anticipated to occur next year.

After the meeting, the proposed plan will be available at Michigan.gov/DNRWaterways. People can send comments to DNR-PRD-CadillacDistrict@Michigan.gov through Friday, July 8.
