Donald Martin Peterson, age 94, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026, with his wife near.
Born April 16, 1932, in Houghton Lake, Michigan, to John and Verna Peterson. He served his country during the Korean War from 1952 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1954.
After returning home, Don built a life that reflected his entrepreneurial nature. He owned and operated a small resort in Houghton Lake for 15 years before turning his attention to the logging industry. He established and operated the Mar-Jon Sawmill. There, Don and his crew built skids and pallets for Detroit Diesel. After that he ventured into the oil field exploration industry.
When he wasn’t working, Don enjoyed the outdoors. He loved fishing, hunting, trapping, and metal detecting. He was also well known among family and friends for his passion as a Bigfoot enthusiast, bringing memorable stories over the years.
Don’s greatest accomplishment was his family. Don is survived by his wife, Beverly Lou Peterson; his daughters, Tonya (Tom) Ray, Kim (Joe) Moody, and Marty (Josh) Nichols; his daughter-in-law, Annette Peterson; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his brother, Russell (Sue) Peterson. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Verna Peterson; his son, Dennis Peterson; one sister; four brothers; and his faithful companion, Jake, who rarely left his side.
Don’s family will remember him privately during this time.
