Dorothy May McGlynn, age 92, of Mio, MI, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 30, 2023.
Dorothy was born in Walled Lake, MI on July 16, 1930 to Elgin and Mary (McSkulin) Brown, Sr. The family moved to Mio in the mid 30’s. Dorothy attended and graduated from Mio AuSable Schools in 1949. She moved to Saginaw, MI, where she worked at Sunshine Biscuit and Saginaw Steering Geer. She later returned to Mio, MI where she purchased Brown’s Restaurant from her parents, later to be named Killian’s Kitchen. After 10 years, she sold the restaurant but continued cooking as though she still owned one. She was known for cooking to feed an army but said she was raised “to always cook for unexpected guests”. Dorothy continued her business career by becoming a self-taught antique entrepreneur. Starting with Auntie’s Antiques she built the business by seeking her treasures at garage sales, estate sales, and furniture trips to North Carolina. The business flourished and she then bought her second store, Granny’s Antiques, which she ran for 32 years. Dorothy worked up to the age of 90.
Dorothy was a committed, competitive, and passionate bowler of 50 years. She was a member of the local Eastern Stars and Rebekahs. When she wasn’t polishing her collections, she enjoyed bird watching, cooking for her family, family get togethers (especially Christmas), playing games (including Bingo, Tonk and Up-Words), and the occasional trip to the Casino. Dorothy loved to win.
She is survived by her three children: Linda (Steve) Morang of Fairview, MI, Bud (Gail) Richards of Mio, MI, and Mary-Jo (Allan) Vallad of Mio, MI; her three stepchildren: Kathleen McGlynn of Marine City, MI, Sharon Beckett of Wentzville, MO, and Laura McGlynn of St. Clair, MI; her two brothers Sonny (Cathy) Brown of Mio, MI and Johnny (Beth) Brown of Mio, MI; her grandchildren: Stephanie Morang, Maelyn Morang, Cristen Morang, Justin (Angie) Richards, Brandon Richards, Lori (Greg) Warholak and Jason Vallad; and her great-grandchildren: Bryan (Kyleigh) Ellis, Macy (Mikey) Taylor, Jessica (Stuart) Sutherland, Bryan Warholak, and Kristen Warholak; and her great-great grandchildren: Kenzlee, Brantley, and Mollie.
She was preceded in death by both parents, her loving husband of 42 years, William James McGlynn, her brother Paul Brown, her sisters: Florence Wilson, Viola, Betty Jane Gerry, and Margaret Ann; her stepdaughter Susan McGlynn, and her daughter-in-law Kathy Richards. She will be greatly missed by her family as she was the rock of the family.
