James Sawyer, 91, of West Branch

James H. Sawyer, age 91, passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. James had been a resident at The Brook of West Branch.

Born October 5, 1931, in Coble, Tennessee, James was the eighth of ten children born to Walter O. Sawyer and Mattie (Shepard) Sawyer.

After graduating from Southeastern High School in Detroit, James served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. Upon honorable discharge, James returned to Detroit and began a long career with the Federal-Mogul Company (Bower Roller Bearing) eventually serving as U.A.W. Local #681 President. James transitioned into a representative role with the International U.A.W. in the early 1970s. He represented independent parts supplier employees for the next (20) years as a U.A.W. International Representative for Region #1.

James enjoyed golf, bowling, traveling, and horse training.

Preceding James in death were his parents, six brothers, three sisters, and his granddaughter, Laura Marie Mills.

In addition to his wife, Gladys, James is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Sue (Gerald) Gregory and Cheryl Ann (William) Goodgine, grandsons Mark (Monica) Mills and Eric (Huan) Mills, and two great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Linden Mills.

Cremation has taken place and no service is scheduled at this time.
