Jim Marshall, 66, of Fife Lake, formerly of Houghton Lake

James (Jim) Alva Marshall, 66, of Fife Lake and former resident and business owner of Houghton Lake, passed away January 14, 2022 surrounded by his children and wife. He was born February 6, 1955 to James and Betty Marshall and grew up in Coleman, MI.

Jim was a witty man, always with a smart aleck comment. He would make people laugh. After several years as a heating contractor in the Houghton Lake area he retired to a farm in Kalkaska County where he and his wife built a home and chose to take in neglected farm animals. Jim had a passion for animals, always showing kindness and concern for their well-being. His chosen retirement was daily chores in the barn to provide a secure and happy lifestyle for his animals. He also enjoyed old cars, westerns, and checking up on his grown children. He was a man of strong work ethic and looking out for family and friends. He was the “go-to” guy for his family whenever they had something break or needed advice on something.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sandra Marshall, his children Scott (Carrie) Marshall, Benjamin (Danielle) Marshall, Jennifer (Tony) Thayer, his sister Jeannie (Glenn) Weed, Terrance (Michelle) Marshall, Richard (Chris) Salter, Tim (Shirley) Salter, stepsons, Brock Chenette, Aaron (Christina) Chenette, Jessica (Hayden) Chenette, grandchildren Jill, Ryan, Nicole, Danielle, Samantha, Alexis, James, Marshall, Tucker, Zoey, Dana, Brianna, Malaki, Brionna, Matthew, Branden, Jack Jr., Marshal, Corrin, Miranda and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Salter, father, James Marshall, step-father, Richard Salter, uncle, Raymond “Alva” Curley and grandson Donald James Marshall.

Memorial contributions may be made to The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®) at www.aspca.org.

A private showing was held on January 16, 2022. A celebration of life will be held at the family farm in the spring with close family and friends. Christler Funeral Home-Houghton Lake Chapel will handle the arrangements.
