Melvin W. Bair, 88, of Houghton Lake

Melvin W. Bair, age 88, of Houghton Lake passed away on Friday April 30, 2021 at Durand Senior Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Melvin was born on May 6, 1932 in Houghton Lake, Michigan to Harry and Mable (Nestell) Bair. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. Melvin was married in Houghton Lake to May Carney. After the service he worked at the bridge and building department for Grand Trunk Western Railroad. He later went to Wisconsin and became a mechanic for Harley Davidson. A special moment in Melvin’s life is when he came across a newborn at 5 corners in Prudenville and was able to rescue the baby girl. He enjoyed watching sports and his morning routine include “Lets Make a Deal” and “The Price is Right”. Melvin loved to race motorcycles and continued to do so up until 80 years of age. He was a lifetime member of the Houghton Lake VFW Post 4034.

Melvin is survived by his wife May Bair, children; Tom Branum, Theresa Sherod, Jacqueline Bair and Kimberly Bair, five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, sisters; Elenor (Ed) Zarzyski and Beverly Bair, brothers; Walter (Joyce) Bair, Leroy Bair and Joseph (and friend, Kathy Thompson) Bair. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters; Everly and Josephine, brothers; Manley, Alfred, William and George, sister-in-laws; Roena Bair and Claire Bair. 

Military graveside service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Roscommon Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Melvin are asked to be directed to the Houghton Lake VFW Post 4034.Christler Funeral Home-Houghton Lake Chapel is serving the family.
