Lark Houston Nelson of St. Helen

Lark Houston Nelson, 76, passed away June 27, 2017 at West Branch Regional Medical Center. He was a resident of St. Helen for the past 13 years, formerly of Roscommon.

He was born on November 2, 1940 in New Madrid, MO to Lark and Clare (Hammonds) Nelson. He retired from General Motors after 30 years of employment.

Mr. Nelson was a member of the St. Helen Community Baptist Church and the Moose Lodge in Houghton Lake. He was a ranger at The Dream Golf Course in West Branch for several years. He loved golf and was on the Monday Afternoon League with the Birch Pointe Golf Club in St. Helen. He was a master wood carver and teacher, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and archery. As much as he enjoyed Michigan, he wintered in Valrico, FL.

Surviving are his son, Mark (Sarah) Nelson of Roscommon; daughters, Tamara (James) Pipkin of Tecumseh and Mauricia (Doug) Buchanan of Green Cove Springs, FL; and grandchildren, Eric (Kristin) Buchanan, Sara Hall, Emily (John) Pazel, Ellen Buchanan, Trenton Nelson and Jacob Nelson.

Also surviving are his brother, Dennis (Sandra) Nelson of Waterford, MI; sisters, Betty (Raymond) Hanner of MO and Brenda (John) Dyson of MS; and lived with his good friend and companion of 13 years, Helen Copeland.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Virginia and Linda.

Visitation at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in St. Helen will begin today (June 29) from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service is June 30 at the funeral home at 12:30 p.m. with visitation starting at 11:30 a.m. Pastor Ken Peterson will officiate.

Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in St. Helen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the St. Helen Community Baptist Church.
