Frank Wilson Spencer, 75, of Roscommon passed away March 20, 2017 at Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital.
Frank was born in Detroit on Dec. 26, 1941 to Frank Wilson and Kathryn J. (Sopata) Spencer. He married Carolyn M. Schneider on Aug. 23, 1969 at Grosse Pointe Park.
While working, Frank lived in Detroit and the surrounding area. His retirement home was built in 2005 where summers and vacations were spent until after his retirement when the move to Roscommon became permanent in 2007.
Mr. Spencer worked as a teacher, principal and administrator at many Catholic schools in the Detroit area and surrounding suburbs from 1968 until retiring in October of 2006. He was also instrumental in laying the foundation for many religious education programs in the Diocese of Detroit.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Roscommon.
Mr. Spencer was an avid reader especially reading daily from his Bible. He also recited the Rosary daily. He enjoyed watching TV dramas and old westerns with ‘real’ cowboys like John Wayne. Camping was a favorite pastime and many trips were taken with the family in the trailer to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. He was also an AARP member.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn; son, Frank III and his wife, Elisabeth ‘Bethie’ Spencer; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.
A Funeral Mass will be held 1 p.m. Monday, March 27, 2017 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Roscommon where visitation begins at 10 a.m. until Mass at 1 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated with Fr. Lawrence Sergott by several of the priests that Mr. Spencer had the pleasure of working with over his many years with the Diocese of Detroit.
Burial will be at Pioneer Cemetery in South Branch Township.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’ choice.
