Armand ‘A.J.’ Joseph LaMarre of Roscommon

Armand “A.J.'” Joseph LaMarre, 95 of Roscommon passed away July 25, 2016 at home surrounded by his family.

He was born in Alpena on May 14, 1921 to Peter Napoleon and Exilda (Robinette) LaMarre, residing in Bay City prior to moving to Roscommon in 1974.

He married Dorothy McGillis on Dec. 29, 1973 in Roscommon, retiring 1980 after 40 years selling road construction equipment. Following retirement he was the manager at Burning Oak Country Club Pro Shop from 1980 to 2005.

Mr. LaMarre loved to golf and had made 10 holes-in-one. He enjoyed watching cowboy movies and all sports and thought baseball was really slow and boring but loved the Tigers. He was known to tell a good story usually with details that may or may not be accurate. In his own words he could ‘lie like a dog’. He was known as a sweet old man with an infectious smile and he could always brighten your day by making you laugh. He loved his daughters most of all.

He was a Lieutenant in the US Navy, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross for his courageous actions at Iwo Jima while serving during WW II as a naval aviator.

He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Roscommon, and was a lifetime member of Charles M. Engel VFW Post 4159 of Roscommon.

Surviving are five children, Henry F. LaMarre of Bay City, Yvonne (Bill) Craves of Hayward, CA, Curt (Regina) Feldhauser of Ellenton, FL, Gayle (Steve) Dawson of Lake City and Laura (Theop) Kennedy of Headland, AL; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and sister, Madeline ‘Mike’ Lucas of Alpena.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; son, Gregory LaMarre; granddaughter, Tara Miller; five brothers, Henry, Albert, Richard, Virgil and Rev. Fr. Ted LaMarre; and three sisters, Sister Thea and Rena LaMarre and Imogene Manion.

A life celebration will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Pioneer Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Gerrish Higgins Educational Fund at RCCF, PO Box 824, Roscommon MI 48653.

Arrangements were handled by Walsh Funeral Home, Roscommon.
