St. Helen woman charged with stealing from elderly

Makayla Coombs, 22, of St. Helen

ROSCOMMON – A St. Helen woman has been charged with stealing from residents at the Brook of Roscommon.

According to a statement from Roscommon County Undersheriff Ben Lowe, In November, deputies received a report of money being stolen from the room of a resident at the Brook of Roscommon.

The management of the Brook has been working alongside investigators since that time to identify an offender. Over the course of the investigation, additional victims were identified within the Brook assisted living center. Some victims were missing cash, and some had experienced fraudulent use of their credit cards.

On Dec. 30, Makayla Coombs, 22, of St. Helen was arrested in connection with these crimes. Coombs was working as a resident care professional at the Brook of Roscommon, with access to the victims of these offenses.

Coombs was arraigned today in the 82nd District Court on a felony charge of unlawful possession of a financial transaction device and an additional felony charge of larceny in a building. Additional incidents and charges remain under investigation and ultimately must be reviewed by the Roscommon County Prosecutors Office.

“Such acts should never happen in assisted living homes to some of our most vulnerable citizens,” Lowe said. “We would like to thank the Brook for their continued assistance in this investigation and helping to restore an environment where our `elderly can be cared for and nurtured.'”

Anyone with additional information reference these crimes is encouraged to call the Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office at 989-275-5101.
